Learning that works - Personalized learning experiences in practice at the Department of Defense

Defense

Learning must deliver something. For the employee, for the team, for the organization. But that only works if the learning experience itself is right. A system can be so smart, with a data lake full of information and an AI-driven analytical model - if the front-end is unclear, or the learning path does not connect, the impact will not materialize. Within the Department of Defense, therefore, work is underway to create a learning environment where technology is finally being felt: in the employee's own learning experience.

This final blog of the AMALT anthology is all about the front layer of the system: the front end, the place where everything comes together and learning really begins.

From system to human

Within Defense's personalized learning environment, the user is central: the employee, the learning supervisor and the manager. In the front-end, they see which learning paths are relevant, why they are recommended, and how they are structured. The system shows not only what someone needs to do, but also why, when and how best to do it.

The strength of this approach lies in its linkage to the underlying data lake and analytics model. The front-end is not a loose learning portal, but a dynamic environment constantly fed by data and insights. Each recommendation is substantiated, each learning activity personalized.

Learning paths with direction and flexibility

Based on the data collected, a learning path that fits the employee's position, experience, development needs and context is automatically constructed. But it does not remain a rigid path. There is room to make choices, accelerate learning or just get extra support.

An employee who recently deployed will get different learning suggestions than someone who just started. And an employee who already has specific certifications or skills does not need to take a refresher course. In this way, Defense avoids wasting time and resources - while increasing engagement.

The learning paths consist of a mix of learning interventions: practical assignments, simulations, reflection exercises, knowledge blocks and games. What is offered is tailored not only to what a person needs to learn, but also to how a person learns best.

A learning experience that rings true

Learning in Defense is learning by doing, reflecting and applying. That means the experience must be intuitive and logical. In the front-end, the employee sees not only their progress, but also what the learning goal is, what's next and how that contributes to the larger context.

Through AI in the background - invisible but powerful - the learning path is getting smarter. The environment learns along with it. If it turns out that certain interventions work well for a job type, the system adapts accordingly. Employee feedback is also incorporated. This creates a learning environment that continues to improve itself.

What this means for L&D professionals

For learning professionals within Defense, this means a shift in focus. Spend less time organizing and planning, more time on guidance and content support. Technology supports, but human contact remains essential. Thanks to the insights from dashboards, and the link to learning objectives, learning supervisors can provide much more focused coaching.

"The learning experience should feel like a logical next step, not an obligation. Thanks to the link between data, AI and a clear front-end, that really works now."
- Max Mertens, NLV

Ready for AMALT

Starting in September 2025, Next Learning Valley will begin large-scale development of this front-end within Defense. In conjunction with the datalake and analytics model, this will form the complete basis for a personalized, data-driven learning environment. An environment that not only makes learning smarter, but also more personal - because it always starts from the employee's unique context and continuously adapts to it.

Do you want to learn that works?

Are you curious about how to apply this within your organization as well? Do you want to move away from standard learning paths and towards real customized learning experiences? Then make an appointment with NLV. Max Mertens will be happy to show you how data, AI and smart learning paths come together in a learning environment that works.
