Smarter learning at Defense: how AMALT enables personalized learning

Defense

Flexible training for an agile military

At a time when geopolitical tensions are rising and Defense is preparing for possible large-scale deployment, there is one constant challenge: getting enough personnel deployable quickly and effectively. Classic, linear learning pathways fall short in this regard. What is needed is flexibility, speed and customization.

That's why a unique collaboration has emerged between TNO, NLR, Defense and Next Learning Valley. Together we are developing AMALT - Automated Monitoring and Advice for optimizing Learning Trajectories.

Personalized learning as a necessity

Whereas one training pathway used to apply to everyone, today's reality demands more adaptability. After all, why should anyone spend time practicing something he or she has already mastered?

With AMALT, we make it possible to tailor learning paths precisely to the individual needs and competencies of employees. This not only increases motivation, but also significantly accelerates the learning process.

What exactly is AMALT?

AMALT is a technological system that collects, analyzes and translates learning and performance data into direct advice for the learner, learning supervisor and manager.

Data from various learning environments - such as e-learning modules, AR/VR training, practical exercises and simulations - is brought together in a Learning Record Store (LRS) and further enriched with, for example, HR data and instructor ratings. Based on this, a rich learning profile is created for each individual.

This data is then analyzed using AI models and visualized in intuitive dashboards. The result: targeted recommendations for the next learning step - precisely tailored, just-in-time and just-as-needed. In doing so, the system aligns seamlessly with Defense's policy frameworks for education and training.

Unique collaboration

AMALT's success is due to the intensive cooperation between four strategic partners:

  • Defense provides domain expertise, practice context and access to real-world learning pathways.
  • TNO and NLR are developing the analytical models, links to complex learning tools (such as simulators) and algorithms for data-driven recommendations.
  • Next Learning Valley provides the integration of these components into a user-friendly and scalable system. Among other things, we build the datalake, the front-end for different audiences and the underlying logic to use data intelligently.

This alliance connects scientific knowledge, technological innovation and practical applicability in a common goal: to fundamentally improve learning within Defense.

Why this matters

AMALT contributes to multiple strategic objectives within Defense:

  • It speeds up personnel readiness.
  • It enables personalized learning even in complex and heterogeneous learning environments.
  • It creates an infrastructure that is scalable and reusable for future learning innovations.
  • It provides insight into the effectiveness of learning activities, allowing for continuous improvement.

In addition, AMALT contributes to employee retention: employees experience more autonomy, relevance and appreciation in their learning.

Innovation in Learning & Development

For Next Learning Valley, AMALT is not just a project, but a milestone. It allows us to realize our vision of personalized, data-driven learning in a demanding context.

The knowledge we are gaining here - about combining xAPI data with HR profiles and content lakes, for example - we will soon use for other sectors, such as healthcare, energy and telecom.

In doing so, we are building a future where learning is not a stand-alone activity, but a continuous and personalized process - powered by data, driven by technology, and always focused on effectiveness.
