In the dynamic world of Learning & Development (L&D), it is essential to constantly innovate and implement effective learning methods. One approach that is gaining increasing attention is social learning. This method promotes knowledge sharing, increases engagement and improves employee onboarding and professional development. An inspiring example of this can be found at Koning Willem I College (KW1C), where social learning has been successfully integrated into the professionalization program for teachers and continues to be actively used.
KW1C's Vision of Learning
KW1C strives to train students to become professionals ready for the future. The college aims to help all who are (hands-on) learners discover and develop their talents so they can realize their dreams. (dus-i.co.uk) This vision emphasizes the importance of a learning community in which both students and staff continuously grow and adapt to changing circumstances.

Professionalization of Teachers
Within this vision, a specific challenge was identified: the need for ongoing teacher professionalization, particularly in the areas of testing and certification. Traditional e-learning methods proved insufficiently effective in promoting engagement and knowledge sharing. An approach was needed that would encourage collaboration and interaction among teachers, leading to higher motivation and improved learning outcomes.
Implementation of Social Learning
To address this challenge, KW1C, in partnership with Next Learning Valley (NLV), integrated social learning into their professionalization program. Through the use of a Learning Experience Platform (StreamLXP), an interactive learning environment was created in which teachers actively participate in discussions, share experiences and learn collaboratively. To this day, this approach continues to provide a significant increase in engagement and motivation among teachers.
Results and Impact
The implementation of social learning has yielded impressive results and remains an essential part of the professionalization program at KW1C:
- Increased Engagement: Teachers are more actively involved in the learning process and feel more motivated to participate in professionalization activities.
- Enhanced Knowledge Sharing: The interactive environment facilitates effective knowledge sharing, leading to a deeper understanding of the subject matter and its application in practice.
- More Efficient Onboarding: New teachers can integrate and adapt more quickly to KW1C's teaching environment thanks to the supportive community and available resources.
- Continuous Professional Development: Teachers have access to ongoing learning opportunities, contributing to their professional growth and overall educational quality.
Each year, approximately 20 teachers per program, spread over four courses per year, continue to participate in this program. This continues to result in significant improvement in teaching quality and staff professionalism.
Marlies Vermunt, one of those involved at KW1C, says, "By using Social Learning in the learning environment at Next Learning Valley, we see teacher engagement going up and the impact is many times greater than when we do it with traditional e-learning."
The Power of Social Learning in L&D
The example of KW1C illustrates the potential of social learning within L&D. By creating an interactive and collaborative learning environment, organizations can increase engagement, promote knowledge sharing and improve the effectiveness of professionalization programs. In an era where innovation and adaptability are crucial, social learning offers a valuable approach to meeting these demands.
