One of the driving forces in that development is Max Mertens, recently officially Chief Innovation & Technology Officer.
Max began his journey at Next Learning Valley with a clear focus: making learning smarter with data. In recent years, his role grew step by step into a key position in the technical and innovative direction of the company. In this blog, we take you through his story. From data to meaningful learning
Max Mertens has been with Next Learning Valley for six years. In his role as Chief Innovation & Technology Officer, he focuses on optimizing learning processes through smart use of data.
"Traditionally, I have been involved in data-driven learning. We look at how we can use information from systems to better design learning: more effective, efficient, and where possible, automated."
His technical background and analytical view ensure that he approaches learning not only as a process, but also as something that can be structurally improved - provided you have the right insights. By linking technology to educational principles, we ensure that our solutions really contribute to better learning, and that we can demonstrate that effect with data.

"I always try to get the most out of our learning solutions. We do that with smart designs as well as by automating processes. This also allows us to ultimately measure whether we have achieved our goals and ambitions."
His strength lies in translating abstract learning issues into technical and innovative solutions that make a difference - both for the user and the organization. Educational foundations are the starting point: efficiency only really comes about when you use technology for what works didactically.
Looking ahead: AI and personalized learning
The world of learning is in flux. Max sees that learning is becoming more personal and that technology, such as artificial intelligence, is playing an increasing role in it.
"We develop solutions that enable personalized learning by providing insight into what someone has already mastered, what is needed based on learning goals and context, and automatically offer appropriate interventions based on that. Not generic pathways, but learning paths that are focused on growth."
His team is exploring new ways to use AI and automation to increase learning efficiency and better tailor the learning process to the user. Think adaptive learning environments, smart dashboards and automated feedback.
