Social Learning at Deltion College: A Practical Example of Innovation in Professional Development

Best practices

In the constantly evolving world of Learning & Development (L&D), it is essential to keep innovating and implementing effective learning methods. An inspiring example of this can be found at Deltion College, where social learning has been successfully integrated into professionalization programs for teachers.

Deltion College: Vision of Learning and Development.

Deltion College strives to challenge students to discover their talents and abilities and to develop optimally, both on a personal level and in their craftsmanship. They do this by providing attractive, future-proof and high-quality MBO education for young people preparing for the labor market, for professionals who want to deepen or broaden their craftsmanship, and for those who want to change their position on the labor market. By offering students, employees and partners an environment in which they can give the best of themselves, Deltion contributes to the growth and development of people and organizations. (deltion.nl)

Professionalization of VeVa Teachers

Within this vision, a specific challenge was identified: the need for ongoing professionalization of teachers, particularly in the area of safety and professionalism (VeVa). Traditional teaching methods proved insufficiently effective in promoting engagement and knowledge sharing. An approach was needed that would encourage collaboration and interaction among teachers, leading to higher motivation and improved learning outcomes.

Implementation of Social Learning

To address this challenge, Deltion College, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense and several ROCs, set up a comprehensive professionalization program for teachers in the Safety and Workmanship program. The emphasis was on personal and professional development, ownership of the learning process and knowledge sharing among colleagues. These teachers were all given positions at one of the ROCs that offer Safety and Workmanship in preparation for students who would enter Defense.

Through the use of a Learning Experience Platform (StreamLXP), an interactive learning environment was created in which teachers could actively participate in discussions, share experiences and learn together. This approach led to a significant increase in engagement and motivation among teachers.

Jack Bijlholt, one of those involved at Deltion College, says, "When you learn with multiple audiences in a digital learning environment, teachers from the ROCs and trainers from the Department of Defense, Social Learning really comes into its own."

Results and Impact

The implementation of social learning has produced impressive results:

  • Increased Engagement: Teachers were more actively involved in the learning process and felt more motivated to participate in professionalization activities.
  • Improved Knowledge Sharing: The interactive environment facilitated effective knowledge sharing, leading to a deeper understanding of the subject matter and its application in practice.
  • More Efficient Onboarding: New teachers were able to integrate and adapt more quickly to Deltion's educational environment thanks to the supportive community and available resources.
  • Continuous Professional Development: Teachers had access to continuous learning opportunities, which contributed to their professional growth and overall teaching quality. This professionalization program led to significant improvement in teaching quality and staff professionalism.

The Power of Social Learning in L&D

The example of Deltion College illustrates the potential of social learning within L&D. By creating an interactive and collaborative learning environment, organizations can increase engagement, promote knowledge sharing and improve the effectiveness of professionalization programs. In an era where innovation and adaptivity are crucial, this approach offers a valuable way to meet these demands.
