In the coming weeks, you'll see her regularly as she guides discussions, starts conversations and helps us explore the power of collaborative learning. But who exactly is Merel, and where does her passion for learning and development come from? Let's get to know her better.
Merel, what sparked your interest in learning and development?
"I started studying Educational Sciences because I noticed - even in everyday situations, such as working in a supermarket - that communication, guidance and support can make a huge difference in how people learn and develop. I don't believe in a 'one-size-fits-all' approach; everyone learns in a different way, and the right motivation is essential to that."
Speaking of motivation, how do you see its role in learning?
"Motivation is everything! If you want people to feel truly engaged in learning, you must pique their curiosity and make it relevant to their personal and professional growth. Without motivation, even the best designed learning experience will not have a lasting impact."
What do you enjoy most about moderating this MOOC?
"I am especially looking forward to the discussions! Social learning is not just about gaining knowledge, but rather sharing, interacting and learning from each other. I hope to facilitate valuable conversations and bring different perspectives together. And I'm looking forward to the insights participants will take away!"
Outside of your work, what topics interest you?
"I enjoy delving into the psychology of learning, especially how culture and socioeconomic status affect development. These factors play a big role in learning experiences, and I find it fascinating to discover how we can make learning more inclusive and effective for everyone."
